Statement Regarding George Floyd and Unrest

As protests across our nation and in Salt Lake City have unfolded over the past week, the pain and anger over the death of George Floyd have exposed the deep damage that exists within our communities because of generations of inequity and systemic racism. Our deepest and sincere sympathies are with the Floyd family, his loved ones, and other communities of color who are in pain at this moment.

Utah State University and members of the Division of Student Affairs are heartbroken by these events. We firmly believe that racism and unequal treatment in every form are not simply problems for our communities of color, but are deep-rooted, systemic issues that everyone is responsible to help solve.

At a challenging time like this, we are doing our part to help ease the suffering by offering support to our USU students who are struggling. Emotional and mental health counseling is available remotely from Counseling and Psychological Services; additional support can be found through the Inclusion Center; and students of concern affected by these traumatic events may be referred to our CARE Center which is housed within the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Contact information for each of these services and the Students of Concern referral form are available at:

We care deeply about each of you, and your well-being is our most important concern. If you need support, please reach out to us.

Take care and be well,
James Morales
Vice President for Student Affairs
